Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report Outline Introduction Ross Sea Icebergs Weddell Sea Icebergs Larsen Ice Shelf Icebergs Current Status Future Movements?

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report Antarctic Icebergs Calving of major icebergs in the past – C-19 and B-15 in Ross Sea largest in recent years C-19 left Ross Sea this year; B-15A split Weddell Sea icebergs regularly monitored Larsen Ice Shelf Icebergs also now regularly monitored New Ross Sea iceberg – B-26

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report July 8, 2003 – Ross Sea In July 2003, there were six icebergs located in and near the Ross Sea. C-19 and it’s “children” were moving out of the Ross Sea toward the iceberg Graveyard (near Mertz Glacier)

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report July 18, 2003 – Ross Sea At this time, the C-19 bergs remain off the coast of Victoria Land, approaching the iceberg graveyard. Sea ice is present in the Ross Sea near McMurdo Sound. The first hint of a crack can be seen in B-15A, where B-15J will eventually form.

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report July 24, 2003 – Ross Sea The increase of sea ice between B-15A and the Drygalski Ice Tongue becomes more apparent through July.

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report August 21, 2003 – Ross Sea Another image of the growing sea ice. Also, can clearly see B-15A beginning to shift apart as B-15J forms.

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report August 22, 2003 - Ross Sea Sea ice continues to build in the Ross Sea. A major ice floe broke up near the Borchgrevink Coast.

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report September 10, 2003 – Ross Sea B-15A pulls out from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report September 17, 2003 – Ross Sea One of the last images of C-19 – also, B-15A has moved back towards ice shelf

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report October 9, 2003 – Ross Sea B-15A finally breaks up!

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report October 21, 2003 – Ross Sea Another image of the formation of B-15J, two weeks later

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report November 14, 2003 – Ross Sea Beginnings of B-15K split. Also, distance increases between B-15A and B-15J

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report December 8, 2003 – Ross Sea B-15J slides along the ice shelf. Also, sea ice has cleared out of the area greatly.

Knuth, et. al June 8, 2004 Iceberg Annual Meeting Antarctic Icebergs – 2003-2004 Status Report December 15, 2003 – Ross Sea B-15A cracks to form B-15K
