Social Studies The Station of Nations

Social Studies The Station of Nations Learn about: The history of space stations. Who is involved in the International Space Station (ISS)? How the space station will be used? The teamwork involved.

Social Studies The Station of Nations Space Station History Science fiction writers like Joules Verne, Cyrano de Bergerac, Edward Everett Hale or Konstantin Tsiolkovasky wrote about space flight long before it became reality. Did their imaginations influence scientists? Read some early science fiction about space flight and compare science fiction with fact.

Social Studies The Station of Nations The Space Race Begins Project suggestion: - Research space exploration. - Develop a timeline to show the progress of space exploration.

Social Studies The Station of Nations The ISS must be large enough for a crew to live and work. Research the NASA sites to discover how many nations have cooperated together, and lived and worked aboard the ISS. What is the significance of these nations working together? Who Is On Board?

Social Studies The Station of Nations How The ISS Is Used? How the ISS is used is important to determine historical perspective. Look at NASA websites to determine: - How long do astronauts stay aboard the ISS? What are the social implications of how space affects the human body?

Social Studies The Station of Nations Getting The ISS Into Space Project suggestions: - Research the 43 nations involved in the mission. Who were allies, and who were “enemies”? - What historical problems did these nations have to overcome in order to work together? - Assign each student 2 nations to do some basic research on (their space involvement, their allegiances, etc.) and jigsaw the information together to make one big report on all nations involved.

Social Studies The Station of Nations Russian Teamwork Use previous research to: Highlight Russian advances in space. Discuss Russian space failures. Discuss why Russia would get the “lead” object in the ISS project. Research other countries and their involvement in the ISS project.

Social Studies The Station of Nations Set cooperative groups to research and discuss: What events led the USA to be the “connecting” agent in this project ? What technologies uniquely American allowed us to take the lead? Look at other modules that involve American technology, and the Space Shuttle. USA Teamwork

Social Studies The Station of Nations Teamwork Teamwork is important in your classroom, in athletic competition, in music, in theatrical performance, and in business. Brainstorm reasons for teamwork and the different areas that it is required for success.

Social Studies The Station of Nations Putting it All Together Investigate other modules, and NASA websites with students to illustrate the training techniques used by astronauts to prepare for working in space. Compare and contrast the elements of putting together the ISS in space.

Social Studies The Station of Nations Power To The Stations 1.Discuss available power sources on Earth, 2.Discuss available power sources in space, 3. Compare and contrast the two lists. 4. Discuss how the use of solar power in space could benefit us on Earth. 5.Discuss this idea from the aspect of it being one good example of how the space station is used to benefit us back on Earth.

Social Studies The Station of Nations What Do We Know Now? Imagine a Space Station in the year 2200. What will it look like? Who will build it? What will be its purpose?

Social Studies The Station of Nations Can SCIENCE Bring Nations Together?
