Date  Crypto = hidden  Zoo = animals  Ology = study of  So…cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals. Notes What is Cryptozoology?  Cryptozoology IS NOT recognized by the scientific community as a legitimate branch of biology/zoology. So…why learn about it? (1) To better understand legitimate biology/zoology (2) To better understand how scientists use the the scientific method. (3) Because it is weirdly interesting SPI 0807.5.1 (Classification) SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity)

More About Cryptozoology  Is the search for and the “study of” organisms that have not yet been discovered and accepted by mainstream science.  Typically the scientific community’s view is that these organism do not exist. Science Notes SPI 0807.5.1 (Classification) SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity) Objections to Cryptozoology (1) Life scientists such as biologists rigorously use the steps of the scientific method. Cryptozoologists are not so rigorous. (2) The scientific method requires verifiable physical evidence (skeletons, remains, DNA samples) which is lacking with Cryptozoology. (3) The food and territory requirements for these "undiscovered animals" makes their existence highly improbable.

Bigfoot  this animal is alleged to be an unknown species of primate, related to apes and humans (a mammal)  Described as follows:  walks upright on two legs  covered with long brown or black hair  stands around 8 to 10 feet tall  lives in wilderness areas  leaves very large footprints  Also known as Sasquatch, Yeti, or the Abominable Snowman  Likes to eat Jack Link's beef jerky (Just Kidding!) Science Notes SPI 0807.5.1 (Classification) SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity)

Loch Ness Monster  is alleged to be an unknown marine animal possibly related to a long-necked aquatic reptile (dinosaur) called a plesiosaur  It reportedly lives in a large lake in Scotland (Loch Ness)  Described as follows:  has a long neck and flippers  is brown or black colored  is very large (about 30 feet long and about 8 feet wide)  breaths under water  has been reported to walk on land occasionally  Also known as "Nessie" Science Notes SPI 0807.5.1 (Classification) SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity)

Sea Serpents Real or Hoax?  alleged to be an unknown large marine animal possibly related to normal sized sea snakes. Science Notes SPI 0807.5.1 (Classification) SPI 0807.5.4 (Biodiversity)

Chupacabra Real or Hoax?  alleged to be an unknown mammal that attacks goats and sucks out their blood.  Also know as the “Goat Sucker”.

Mokele Mbembe Real or Hoax?  alleged to be an undiscovered dinosaur living in the swamps and lakes of remote Africa possibly related to the Apatosaurus
