2 Homework and announcements
Due: Colored Periodic Table (In Notebooks) Textbook Pages Science Fair Countdown Due November 12/13, 2015 (30 days) Working on: Identifying variables and collection data Extra Credit Due 10/26/15 Element Pumpkin Science in the News USA TestPrep due every Monday

3 Title: The Periodic Table
L.O. SWBAT describe properties of the periodic table.

4 Color code your periodic table!
= non metal = semi-metal = metal = inert gases Color code your periodic table!

5 The Periodic Table of Elements
Inert Gasses

6 Modern Periodic Table Big Idea: Properties of an element can be predicted from its location on the periodic table. The modern Periodic Table elements are arranged into rows and columns in order of increasing atomic number. The atomic number of an element equals the number of protons in an atom of that element. 6

7 Elements are organized into rows called periods. There are 7 periods.
Metals are on the left of the table, with the most reactive metals on the far left. Increasing Atomic Mass Decreasing reactivity of metals

8 Elements are organized into columns called groups.
There are 18 groups. Groups consist of elements with similar characteristics. Example, Group 1 elements react violently with water, Group 2 react slowly with water or not at all.

9 Summary Write a paragraph (3-4 sentences) reflecting on the trends of the periodic table. Today I learned about… Describe how Mendeleev organized the periodic table of elements.
