3. Perperouna is a traditional custom that takes place in agricultural areas in Greece after long periods of drought, usually in autumn or spring. It is an appeal to God to start raining so that the fields can have a good yield. Perperouna is a young girl aged 8 to 10 years old, who wears a long white dress covered with flowers and green branches of trees and plants. This girl is usually an orphan or from a poor family so that God can have mercy on her and it starts raining. The girl visits every house of the village whereas the girls that accompany her sing. I n front of this group of girls there is a woman who holds a pot with holy water and a branch of basil which she puts it in the holy water and sprinkles it around. Perperouna stops at every house then the housewife comes out and pours water on the girl. Then Perperouna turns around, tosses and shakes herself so that the water falls on the ground the same way the rain drops fall. The housewives give Perperouna some treats like sweets or food, egg, fruit etc. In most cases there is rain when this ceremony ends.
