The Lymphatic System Contains the lymph nodes, lymph vessels, spleen, and thymus gland. Produces disease-fighting immune cells. Contains the lymph (watery fluid that has entered lymph capillaries and is found in lymph vessels). Formed when liquid plasma and protein from the blood ooze out of their capillaries and are then picked up by the almost transparent lymph capillaries (vessels). 6.8

Lymph and blood transport various substances around the body. Lymph DOES NOT contain RBC’s or platelets. Lymph DOES contain WBC’s. Lymph carries less protein than blood. Both carry about the same amount of H2O, salts, sugar, and waste material.

Lymphatic vessels are found in every organ and tissue of the body. These lymphatic vessels flow alongside one’s blood vessels. However, unlike blood, lymph does not flow because of a heart “pump”. Lymph flows slowly, coaxed by the movement of the body’s muscles, until it empties back into the blood vessels just above the heart. 6.8
