9 Science, research and development European Commission ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 4.2.1. 4.2.1.Improved damage assessments on cultural heritage The target is to better predict and prevent environmental damage to cultural heritage and identify pollution threshold levels. Assessment of the chemical, physical and biological impact of urban multipollutants on movable and immovable cultural heritage, including the effects of particles and gases such as O 3, N and S compounds and their synergistic effects as proposed by the EC Directives on urban air quality. Assessment of the effects of microclimate and indoor and outdoor pollutant deposition on historic buildings, museums, libraries, galleries and archives

10 Science, research and development European Commission ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 4.2.2. 4.2.2.Development of innovative conservation strategies The target is to develop tools for the sustainable management of cultural heritage. Preventive conservation strategies for indoor and outdoor cultural assets. New conservation products, methods and technologies compared to existing alternatives. Treatments’ reversibility and their non-destructive characteristics, the interaction between old and new conservation materials and methods on structural or on surface interventions. Environmental control systems (air conditioning, showcases), as well as building design methodologies and models for an integrative protection of cultural heritage. Demonstration of conservation and restoration strategies for historic buildings. Cost/benefit, life cycle and environmental impact analysis to assess strategies for the protection of cultural heritage, compared to accepted norms such as international charters (Athens, Venice)

11 Science, research and development European Commission ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 4.2.3. 4.2.3.Foster integration of cultural heritage in the urban setting The target is to develop tools, methodologies and models to assist the decision making for sustainable exploitation and integration of cultural heritage in the urban development context, consistent with its protection conservation and access. Identification and characterisation of technological and natural hazards relevant to cultural heritage, complemented by risk assessments and management methods and tools for mitigating the consequences, improving the safety of historic buildings, objects and people, and developing the scientific basis needed for the inclusion of cultural heritage protection in safety regulations. Tourism and sustainable exploitation and conservation of cultural heritage, including its protection against vandalism and civil disturbance. 37 Science, research and development European Commission ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage “No Go” ANALYSIS

38 Science, research and development European Commission ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Messages for potential proposers based on experience of the first evaluation Present the objectives and the potential results in the context of the work programme. Explain why the proposed approach is the best way of meeting the objectives. Describe the methodology showing how the results would be obtained. Justify claims for socio-economic impacts. All levels (researchers, end users, public authorities etc.) of stakeholders should be involved in the research. The state of the art must be described (a description is of much more value than a list of references!). The approach to be followed must be sufficient to convince the evaluators of its credibility Ask somebody not involved to critically evaluate the draft proposal.
