5 GREEK/ROMAN MYTHOLOGY In Greek mythology the name “Cygnus” means “Swan”. Cygnus received its name when the god Zeus transformed into a beautiful swan to win the love of the goddess “Nemesis”. The goddess became pregnant and laid an egg and a shepherd found the egg and gave it to the queen of Sparta “Leda”. She then gave the egg to her husband the king of Sparta “Tyndareus”.
