2001 Planning Your Future: Goal Setting The Academy of Irving ISD

2001 Agenda Why Set Goals? Dream vs. Goal The 7 Steps Set your School Goals Do it!

2001 Dream vs. Goal A dream is the idea in your mind A goal is a written word or phrase A goal is not just ideas scribbled on a piece of paper A goal is focused; it is your road for your future

2001 Goal Setting Step 1 Life consists in what a man is thinking of all day. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Make sure the goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good.

2001 Goal Setting Step 2 A goal can’t contradict any other goals.

2001 Goal Setting Step 3 Develop goals in the 6 areas of life: Family and Home Financial and Career Spiritual and Ethical Physical and Health Social and Cultural Mental and Educational Develop goals in each area of your life to be more balanced

2001 Goal Setting Step 4 Write your goals positively, not negatively. Your subconscious mind doesn’t judge right from wrong, it only does what it’s told. So tell your mind only positive things to get positive results.

2001 Goal Setting Step 5 Write your goal out in complete detail. The more detail your mind has, the better it functions. Instead of “good grades”, write “a 90 in English” and an “A” in citizenship.

2001 Goal Setting Step 6 Make sure your goal is high enough. If you shoot for A’s, and you miss, you’ll have B’s. If you shoot for 70’s and you miss, what happens?

2001 Goal Setting Step 7 This is the most important goal: Write your goals down! Writing your goals down helps set the process in motion. Visualize your goals, cut out pictures and put them where you can see them every day.

2001 Now what? Every decision you make should be in line with your goals Don’t discuss them with people who will tell you it can’t be done! The difference between a goal and a dream is the written word. -Gene Donohue

2001 Set Your Goals ACADEMIC / CAREER / PERSONAL 1.Use the academic goals sheet and write down your academic goal for each class you’re taking this year. (i.e. what grade is your target goal?) 2.Write down 2 goals you have for this year. 3.Write down 2 goals you have for after High School.

2001 Now…. Work toward those goals and track your progress!
