3.  Ghana was the first great trading empire in West Africa.  It rose to power in the A.D. 400s.  It was located in an area covered mostly with grasslands, stretching across north central Africa.  Farmers in Ghana could produce enough food because there was fertile soil and they knew how to make iron tools.  Due to its location between Sahara salt mines and gold mines near West African coastal rain forests, it became an important crossroads of trade.
