2 What you will learn… What does it mean to be a Title I school? What is the1% Set-Aside for parental involvement and what is the Parental Involvement Policy? What is Indistar? What is the School-Parent Compact? How will I be notified if my child is taught by a teacher who is not Highly Qualified? How can I be involved?

3 What does it mean to be a Title I School? Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards. Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers Being a Title I school also means parental involvement and parents’ rights.

4 How our school is using this funding? School Effectiveness Incentives Freshmen Academy Freshman Transition Summer Academy Instructional Resources Student Mentoring Program Technology for 21st Century Teaching and Learning Credit Recovery Academy and Saturday School Professional Development for Positive School Culture and Effective Teacher Leaders

5 What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved? Any LEA with a Title I Allocation exceeding $500,000 is required by law to set aside 1% of it’s Title I allocation for parental involvement. This plan addresses how the District will implement the parental involvement requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It includes… –The LEA’s expectations for parents –How the LEA will involve parents in decision-making –How the LEA will work to build the schools’ and parents’ capacity for strong parental involvement to improve student academic achievement You, as Title I parents, have the right: to be involved in the development of this plan to be involved in how this money is spent.

6 Who are the parent leaders at my school ? Dr. Daisy Walker Daisy.walker@cms.k12.nc.us How can I be involved? Join the School Improvement Team Volunteer to contact other parents regarding important school information. Ex. – 100% Compact completion Stuff envelops Talk to your neighbors and let them know what is going on at West Charlotte Proctor testing Become a mentor Contact our office at 980-343-6060 to volunteer.

7 What is Indistar? is a web-based system used by the school improvement team to inform, coach, sustain, track, and report improvement activities. The bottom line is that Indistar® will guide improvement teams through a continuous cycle of assessment, planning, implementation, and progress tracking. Focus will be clear, responsibilities assigned, efforts synchronized. You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in the development of this plan.

8 What is the School-Parent Compact? The compact is a commitment from the school, the parent, and the student to share in the responsibility for improved academic achievement You, as Title I Parents, have the right to be involved in the development of the School- Parent Compact.

9 How will I be notified if my child is taught by a teacher who is not Highly-Qualified? Our school’s present status is 96% of Highly Qualified Teachers. Letters of Notification will be provided to you from the school if your student is taught by a teacher not meeting ESEA’s requirements for Highly-Qualified.
