QKS520 Group 5 Presentation: Lesson 2 Hypothesis Testing and the Effectiveness of Electronic Road Pricing in Singapore

Activity 1 (15 min): Recap on Hypothesis Testing A fifteen minute review of the following concepts will be presented to the students: Sampling distribution Central Limit Theorem Null & Alternative Hypotheses Test Statistic Critical Region & Critical Value Level of Significance 1-tail and 2-tail tests p-value

Activity 2 (15 min): Design Experiment (Planning) In groups of 4 or 5, students are to determine a numerical parameter for traffic flow through a specific ERP gantry that they wish to collect data and perform hypothesis testing on the population mean in order to argue whether the Electronic Road Pricing system in Singapore is effectiveness or not. Possible parameters are as follows: Speed of vehicles Time taken for vehicles to pass through a stretch Number of vehicles passing through a stretch

Activity 2 (15 min): Design Experiment (Procedure for Hypothesis Testing) Based on the sample that the students intend to collect, they are to describe the procedure for hypothesis testing in detail, taking note to explain the following points in particular: Choice of numerical value for the null hypothesis Choice of inequality used in the alternative hypothesis Distribution that the Sample Mean follows Choice of Test used (Z or t?)

Activity 2 (15 min): Design Experiment (Evaluation and Analysis) Students are to evaluate the feasibility of their experiment design by discussing the following: Possible obstacles to conducting the experiment Limitations and advantages of using hypothesis testing Ways they can improve their experiments

Activity 3 (20 min): Students’ Presentations At the end of the discussion, every group is to present its discussion with the aid of their worksheets and the visualiser. Teacher is to take note of key points discussed for the consolidation later.

Consolidation (10 min) The teacher summarises the key ‘take-away’ points and collect the worksheets for assessment purposes. The teacher is to inform the students to revise on Correlation & Regression for the next lesson.
