AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. LAYERS OF DESIGN

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. Scientific intuitiveexperience sketch research investigation modeling construction FROM THE INTUITIVE TO THE SCIENTIFIC

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. The Laboratory “fumehoodis stupidus” Laboratory Building Type Behavioral Characteristics: 40-70% fume hood dominated More evenly distributed loads beyond fume hood Equipment barriers to efficiency Changing Behavior with Technology!

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. PASSIVE SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES Orientation is harvests daylight and reduces undesirable heat gain Building is organized by use as specific species depending upon internal programmatic space needs High Performance Building Envelope Solar Shading utilized on all exposures Day Lighting and Task Lighting Lab and office wings optimized for volume and daylight Office wing is shaded by armature designed for future photovoltaic panels Egress stairs are non conditioned and shaded by terra cotta lattice

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. ACTIVE SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES proximity sensors at fume hoods and bio safety cabinets that control VAV exhaust daylight and motion sensors and abundant natural light Under-floor air in offices low pressure drop cooling and heating coils low velocity ducts (1,200 FPM) to reduce pressure drop phase change sensible heat recovery from lab exhaust air (preconditions fresh air intake) atrium tempered with office return air office return air introduced into outside incoming air stream via atrium wrap around heat recovery to dehumidify the auditorium fresh air intake evaporative spray coolers using condensate water on the refrigerant heat recovery in lab air handlers to improve performance during cooling season

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. METRICS: IMM 229,225 GSF (210,000 GSF original program) Achieved 10% space efficiency improvement and 10% increase in research staff work and research space provisions 20-25% Energy Consumption Reduction in MEP, 30-35% in lighting 10-15% Reduction in Total Water Use 25% of Total Construction Waste Recycled or Salvaged Carbon Emissions Avoided (48% Fly Ash in Concrete Mixture) Shared equipment has reduced energy and first costs Construction $10M below budget

Lessons Community is important Lab and office relationship encourages community Open labs and shared support labs benefit Investigator and Institute Flexible design adapts for research/office needs easily Species increases comfort and conserves energy Purchase the lab furniture sparingly Shade and water make outdoors useful year around Cascade air system works and increases efficiency Day lighting is appreciated by everyone and saves money Architecture recruits/retains talent

AASHE CONFERENCE 2008 | BNIM Architects | people. innovation. design. A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and in the end must be unmeasurable. — Louis Kahn
