3 These advocates were once students just like you. They chose to use their voices to improve their communities and world. So can YOU! Famous Advocates

4 Chinese Student Protestors In May, 1989, student-led, pro- democracy protesters demonstrated in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. Protesters wanted more human rights and freedoms Protests ended after 7 weeks when the government retaliated with gunfire and tanks; hundreds, perhaps thousands were killed.

5 Las Madres en la Plaza del Mayo Mothers in Argentina organized this group to advocate for the return of their children who had “disappeared” They marched non-violently each week starting in May of 1977 to memorialize their missing loved ones Their work continues today

6 Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) American business mogul Advocated for helping others help themselves Advised the wealthy to pass on their wealth to better humanity Gave money to build more than 2,500 free public libraries

7 Dolores Huerta (1910-1994) Worked for more than 50 years to advocate for marginalized communities Created the Agricultural Workers Association Co-founded the United Farm Workers with her friend Cesar Chavez

8 Baron Charles de Montesquieu (1689-1755) French nobleman, philosopher, and political thinker Advocated for a separation of powers in three branches of government

9 John Locke (1632-1704) British Philosopher Advocated for the protection of individual rights from the government Called for a separation of church and state

10 Characteristics of Advocates Advocates share many positive characteristics and act in similar ways

11 Fact Finders: They thoroughly research issues and try to deal objectively with their own related prejudices and preferences

12 Individualists: They avoid getting caught up in group thinking and make their own decisions based on information; they are polite but committed

13 Good Listeners: They hear what others are saying and communicate their understanding of what is being said and felt

14 Persevere: They are determined advocates; they are polite while remaining firmly committed to the cause

15 Credible: They understand the need for being trustworthy, honest, and sensitive to all involved

16 Communicators: They are able to clearly and persuasively articulate their point of view

19 Why is clean water access important? Prevents deadly diseases Allows children time to go to school and women time to go to work Helps prevent deformities Keeps women and children safe from dangerous trek

24 Advocacy Facts The average distance a person in the developing world walks to get clean water is 3.7 miles in one direction Every 20 seconds a child dies somewhere in the world from a waterborne illness 884 million people lack access to clean water - that’s almost 3x the population of the USA
