What is the best way to define “job readiness” for individuals (with & without disability) accessing America’s Job Centers and its partners? The capacity of an individual to work. You know someone is “job ready” when they can sing, dance, chew gum, file expense reports and swirl a baton that is on fire – ALL AT THE SAME TIME. The level of preparedness of an individual to pursue employment.

While this might sound good in theory, what would it look like in practice? Wouldn’t it be difficult to effectively judge and determine the capacity of an individual to work from your position at the Job Center? There are so many variables (e.g. all kinds of “individuals” and an equally limitless array of “work” positions). How could you be sure you were right? All too often people with disabilities are determined not to be “job ready” and as a result are put into specialized services or programs to help them become “job ready”. An important role of America’s Job Centers and its partners is to develop and increase the preparedness of job seekers (both those with and without disabilities). Preparedness in this instance includes helping someone be in job search mode, identifying work skills and/or gaining job training for the position being pursued, tailoring resumes for positions being sought, problem-solving work transportation, encouraging an appropriate job match, etc… To learn more visit the CareerOneStop Resource Library: Job Development For People With Disabilities: Overview CORRECT!
