Future Needs Assessment  4 X Focus groups facilitated with key stakeholders = Service users, peer mentors, DD lead practitioners + service/operational managers – What is working well + why? What is not working well, why + possible solutions? How can the disconnection between service users, practitioners, services + commissioners be overcome? Alternative DD Models

Future Needs Assessment – Initial Findings What is working well + why?  The DD Project + DD Network  Agreed care pathways, joint/link working partnerships and protocols are in place  People, who are willing to engage/address substance use  Single point of access to services  Services delivered in the same location  Service user involvement and mutual aid are in place  Services have ability to be flexible to work with a persons support needs /criteria  Engage at levels relating to persons need, can offer outreach/floating support or able to offer early intervention  Services that have staff trained in DD and services/professional have a good knowledge of other services

Future Needs Assessment – Initial Findings What is not working well, why + possible solutions?  Crisis + high risk situations  Pre-contemplative substance users  Inpatient services + risk management  People who are undiagnosed or have a specific diagnosis i.e. personality disorder  Accessibility of services  Inconsistency in DD provision  Recovery, peer + mutual support  Families, carers + concerned others

Future Needs Assessment – Next Steps  Report drafted + awaiting sign off by DD Strategy Group  ZIP have contributed own section to report = independent service users perspective  Full report and summary will be available to DD Network  New DD Project action plan will include identifying how to address what is not working well  Some work streams/projects are already addressing issues e.g. Crisis Assessment Service + Harm Reduction pilot, Inpatients + Harm Reduction pilot

National Policy Updates !!!

2 Key New Drivers  Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat = A joint statement from DoH + Home Office about how public services should work together to respond to people who are in mental health crisis.  Mental Health National Intelligence Network= Aims to bring together publically accessible data into one place to support the development of better health and social care.  Both include specific outcomes in relation to DD

What does this mean????  Potential New/refresh of Dual Diagnosis Guidance – This will include guidance for commissioners  Development of guidance/service spec for commissioners to enable crisis services to meets needs of people experiencing DD + crisis  Better data available nationally and locally i.e. - Match NDTMS and MHMDS NICE guidelines in development – Dual diagnosis: community-based services to meet people’s wider health and social care needs when they have a severe mental illness and misuse substances
