Email Basics www.mcpld.org

What is Email? Email is short for electronic mail. Email is a method for sending messages electronically from one computer to another.

How does Email work? Email begins on a computer that is connected to the Internet When you access your email account (through the Internet), you are able to send and receive messages. The message is sent over telephone wires or a cable to a server.

How does Email work? The server acts like a post office and sorts the message and sends it out on the Internet. Based on the email address, the email is sent to the correct address. The email stays on the server until the recipient “picks up” their email from their email account or “mailbox.”

Anatomy of an Email To: Who the message will be sent to CC: Who will get a copy of the message Subject: What the message is about Body: The content or text of your message

Email Address Username: this is the unique name that you create. The username is case sensitive & can include numbers. Axon sign: @ Server name: the name of the mail server. This follows the @ sign. Ex: mcpldtraining@yahoo.com The username mcpldtraining is using the mail server from yahoo.com

Netiquette Avoid using all uppercase letters. Your reader will assume you are SHOUTING AT THEM. Get permission before forwarding someone else’s message. Avoid sending chain letters. Include the subject of your message in the subject field

Be Cautious! Phishing: Phishing is a type of online fraud where the perpetrators attempt to acquire personal, financial, and/or other account information. This type of fraud is typically initiated by sending an unsolicited but official-looking email claiming to be from a reputable company, such as a bank, a credit card firm, or an online establishment. The fraudulent email usually contains an urgent message that tries to lure the recipient into providing sensitive information.

Be Cautious! Do not respond to emails asking for any personal or financial information. Legitimate companies will never ask you to verify or provide any confidential information in an unsolicited email.

Be Cautious! Be cautious when clicking on links within a suspicious email. Most phishing emails contain a link that leads to an official-looking web page which requires the recipient to log in or enter some personal information. Though the web page may contain official logos and look exactly the same as the legitimate company's web site, any information submitted via these spoofed web page(s) will be sent to the scammers.

Be Cautious! I've received an email that asks for my Yahoo! ID and password, what should I do? Yahoo! will never ask you for your password in an unsolicited email. You should report the incident to Yahoo! (add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/security/cgi_f eedback)
