3 1. Assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand Picture of Franz FerdinandAnswer these Questions: What is an assassination? Was his death the ONLY cause of World War One (WWI)?

4 2. Alliances Picture:Answer these Questions: What is an alliance? What are allies? Why was signing alliances important? What does triple mean? Google these two questions: – Which countries were allied (included in) by the Triple Alliance? – Which countries were allied by the Triple Entente?

5 3. Imperialism Picture:Answer these Questions: What is imperialism? By 1900, how many continents were included in the British empire? What continent did France have most of the ownership/control over? What continent did Germany have a little ownership/control of? – *Germany was “annoyed” by imperialism because they didn’t have much land and tried to get land later than Germany & France

6 4. Militarism Picture:Answer these Questions: What is militarism? “Arms Race” means that countries were trying to get the most guns as quickly as possible. Which two countries doubled their army size between 1870 & 1914? Which two countries were fighting for control (mastery) of the sea? What was the British’s “Dreadnought”? Fill in the correct countries: A German army officer (named Schlieffen) made a plan to attack ___________ through _________ if __________ made an attack on Germany (this plan was called the Schlieffen plan).

7 5. Nationalism Picture:Answer these Questions: What does nationalism mean? What is a supporter? After the Napoleonic wars, a meeting was held called the Congress of Vienna. Both Germany and Italy were divided countries (people did not get along). Both Germany and Italy re-unified (came together) due to __________?

8 6. Crises: Moroccan Crisis **Crisis were important because allies stuck together to help each other fight off other countries!** Picture:Answer these Questions: What is a crisis? The Moroccan Crisis of 1904: – Morocco was a country that was given to France by Britain. – The people in Morocco (Moroccans) wanted independence and Germany supported them. – In 1911, Germany protested against France and said let the Moroccans be independent! – But Germany supported France owning Morocco and they gave Germany land called the French Congo to get them to stop opposing France.

Crisis: Bosnian Crisis **Crisis were important factors because allies stuck together to help each other fight off other countries!** Picture:Answer these Questions: In 1908, the country of Austria- Hugary took control of the country of Bosnia The people in the country of Russia/Serbians were angry because they wanted Bosnia Serbia threatened to fight Austria-Hungary for Bosnia Since Germany was allies with Austria-Hungary, this meant that they would help Austria-Hungary Germany prepared to fight Russia; There was no war because Russian backed down.
