2 Research Question Is there a significant difference in the ability of apple cider vinegar and acetic acid in controlling fasting blood glucose levels and HbA1c levels in male STZ-induced Type I Diabetic mice?

3 Introduction In 2006, the World Health Organization recognized diabetes as a “chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for families, countries and the entire world.”

4 Significance of the Study Diabetes Mellitus has a very high morbidity in any demographic around the world. Studies on ways to decrease and maintain blood glucose levels remain highly relevant and significant to lessen the complication of the disease The hypoglycemic effect of both acetic acid and various types of vinegar, apple cider vinegar in particular, have been studied separately No comparison was made if the hypoglycemic effect of vinegar was attributable to its the acetic acid content The result of this study may lead to a more directed, focused and specific approach to the explanation of hypoglycemic effects of vinegar

5 Objectives General Objective: To compare the hypoglycemic effect of apple cider vinegar and acetic acid in streptozotocin-induced Type I diabetic male Balb/c mice Specific Objectives: 1.To compare the effect of acetic acid and apple cider vinegar on fasting blood glucose levels of male STZ-induced Type I Diabetic mice 2.To compare the effect of acetic acid and apple cider vinegar on the HbA1c levels of male STZ-induced Type I Diabetic mice 3.To determine whether the acetic acid contained in the apple cider vinegar is responsible for its effect on blood glucose levels and HbA1c

6 Methodology Forty five, 6-8 weeks old, male Balb/c mice Housed in individual cages Acclimatized for one week at room temperature under a 12 hour light and dark cycle Standard pellets and tap water will be fed to the mice every day Low-Dose STZ Induction Protocol of the Animal Models of Diabetic Complications Consortium (AMDCC) will be used for the induction of diabetes mice STZ-Na citrate buffer solution will be prepared Fasted for 4 hours and anesthethized with isoflurane. Intraperitoneal Administration of STZ solution at 50 mg/kg STZ solution will be administered once for five days
