7 Stages of Artistic Development

8 Stage 1 - Manipulative Play with art materials rather than use them to create artwork Children learn about the properties of objects (crayons, paper, clay, etc)

9 Stage 2 - Scribbling Begins at age 2- 2 ½ Random marks on a page Requires that children make eyes and hands work together

10 Stage 3 - Shaping Begins at age 2 ½ - 3 ½ Intentional open and closed shapes Requires more developed small motor skills

11 Stage 4 – Early Representation Begins at age 3 ½ - 5 Crude representations of people and objects; often unrecognizable First use of symbols “Tadpole people” –Begin by drawing head and face, bodies are an afterthought, limbs are often missing
