1 FCIM Mini-Lesson SC.E.2.4.3 Astronomical Unit AU

2 EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION ASTRONOMICAL UNIT or AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun. Astronomical units are used to measure distances within the solar system. 1AU = 1.5 X 108 km 150,000,000 km 150 million km

3

4 A LIGHT-YEAR is a unit of distance equal to the
distance light travels in one year. 1 light-year = 9.5 X 1012 km 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers 9.5 trillion km

6 The UNIVERSE is the sum of
all matter and energy that exists, that ever has existed, that will ever exist.

7 How far in AU is Mercury from the Sun?
MODELED INSTRUCTION Earth is 1 AU from the Sun. Light from the Sun takes 8.3 minutes to reach Earth. Light from the Sun takes approximately 3.2 minutes to reach Mercury. How far in AU is Mercury from the Sun?

8 3.2/8.3 = 0.39 AU 3.2 minutes (sunlight to reach Mercury)
÷ by 8.3 minutes (sunlight to reach Earth) = 0.39 AU Sun to Earth is 1 AU Sun to Mercury is shorter distance, < 1 (less than) AU 3.2/8.3 = 0.39 AU

9 Light from the Sun takes 8.3 minutes to reach Earth.
G UIDED PRACTICE Earth is 1 AU from the Sun. Light from the Sun takes 8.3 minutes to reach Earth. Light from the Sun takes 6 minutes to reach Venus. How far in AU is Venus from the Sun?

10 6/8.3 = 0.72 AU 6 minutes (sunlight to reach Venus)
÷ by 8.3 minutes (sunlight to reach Earth) = 0.72 AU Sun to Earth is 1 AU Sun to Venus is shorter distance, < (less than) 1AU 6/8.3 = 0.72 AU

11 Light from the Sun takes 8.3 minutes to reach Earth.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Earth is 1 AU from the sun. Light from the Sun takes 8.3 minutes to reach Earth. Light from the Sun takes minutes to reach Jupiter. How far in AU is Jupiter from the Sun?

12 43.2/8.3 = 5.2 AU 43.2 minutes (sunlight to reach Jupiter)
÷ by 8.3 minutes (sunlight to reach Earth) = 5.2 AU Sun to Earth is 1 AU Sun to Jupiter is a longer distance, > (greater than)1AU 43.2/8.3 = 5.2 AU

13 The distance that light travels in one year is 9.5 trillion km or
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE The distance that light travels in one year is 9.5 trillion km or (9.5 X 1012km). Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years away from Earth. How far is the star Alpha Centauri from Earth?

14 =4.1 x 10 13 km 9.5 trillion km or (9.5 x 10 12 km) (1 light year)
X 4.3 light years (distance to Alpha Centauri in light years) = (9.5 x 10 12) X 4.3 = x 10 12 Round to whole number = 41 x 10 12 Scientific notation = 41 x to 4.1 x 10 13 =4.1 x km
