2 Diet and energy Energy enables the body to function Energy is acquired from the food eaten Energy requirements differ between people due to: –Their age — more energy is needed during the early years of growth –Their gender — males tend to use more energy than females –Their lifestyle — active people need more energy

3 Energy Energy is measured in joules or kilojoules (kJ) 1 kJ = 1000 joules The exact amount of energy available in food is usually marked on the container Energy from food is also commonly measured using calories or kilocalories (kcal) 4.2 kJ = 1 kcal

4 Energy requirements Basal metabolic rate (BMR) –This is the lowest level of energy required by the body for normal healthy living –Age, gender, body size and body composition determine BMR Physical activity level (PAL) –Any activity requires a further amount of energy –The higher the activity level, the higher the energy input and output needed Total energy needed = BMR + PAL
