2 The students will explain the impact of the war on the Home front by comparing the similarities and differences between the warring nations. Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. The Chapter 19 test will be Friday, April 8 Warm-up: Examine the posters on page 645: 1. How are the two posters similar? 2. Why do you think American and Soviet posters encouraged women to work in war-related jobs? Mini-Lesson: Explain mobilization, kamikaze, blitz

3 The Mobilization of 4 Nations Soviet Union War called, “The Great Patriotic War” Stalingrad under siege for 900 days People starved entire factories moved to interior regions shortages in food and housing Women worked in industries, mines, railroads increased 60 % fought in battle-snipers/air-crews of bomber squadrons

4 No fighting occurred Arsenal of the Allied Powers Creation of boomtowns shortages of houses and schools Increases in transiency African-Americans joined the military and moved to Northern cities for work Japanese Americans forced to relocate to camps

5 Did not cut consumer goods production Did not increase production of armaments took the food of conquered countries Kept the resources in the civilian economy Tripled armaments between 1942 and 1943 Mobilized the economy in July 1944 Women kept from working early, then needed to fill the factories, but many stayed home

6 Economy already in high gear Already a mobilized society Planning board to control prices, wages, labor, and resources Kamikaze or divine wind Women not involved in the war effort brought in Korean/Chinese laborers Women given the right to vote in 1947

7 Compare and contrast the 4 countries. Be sure to include their economy, role of women and damage to the homeland.

8 Read Chapter 19.2 and prepare for a Reading check on Friday.
