1 GUIDED MATH AND MATH WORKSHOP
A Common Core Approach to Mathematics Instruction

3 What Does This Mean? We cannot rely on simply teaching students a formula to answer math problems anymore. Students will often need to learn these concepts at varying paces, as not all students will master a deep understanding at the same time.

4 Math Workshop Allows for small group instruction
Students have independent practice and group work Allows for specific needed skill building

5 What would a math workshop look like?
Students receive whole-group instruction (10-15 minute mini-lesson) Students engage in math stations (40-60 minutes) Teacher provides whole-class review, closing, and possible preview of next lesson (10-15 minutes)

Goals Influences Promote attention & minimize distractions Provide structure, access, & orderliness Make efficient use of limited space. # of students Size and shape of room Placement of non-moveable items Available furniture Types of lessons, learning formats & activities that will ensue.

HOW TO GROUP STUDENTS: Put students in groups of no more than 6 students. Students move up or down by unit-of-study based on their need. Groups are fluid.

9 How do I get started? Choose your first unit of study.
Use a pretest to figure out where students are. Plan lessons and choose materials

10 WHERE DO I GET MY MINILESSONS?

11 How do I get started? Choose stations.
Spend 1 week teaching students routines and how to work in stations. Teach! Assess.

5 stations 5 minutes in each

15 Tips Choose stations that: You don’t need to change often
students know routines and can get started quickly and independently much less time consuming for you more time spent planning quality small group lessons Don’t require paperwork too much paper going through room have to worry about collecting/grading/check/returning
