1 Mitosis During interphase, the DNA is not condensed and individual chromosomes cannot be discerned As the cell enters prophase, the chromosomes condense After DNA replication in S phase, each chromosome has two DNA molecules, known as sister chromatids Until they are separated during anaphase, the chromatids are held together at a region called the centromere

4 Vocabulary Checkpoint Chromosomes : in Eukaryotes, a structure composed of DNA and proteins that bares part of the genetic information of the cell Chromatid : one of two identical chromosomal strands into which a chromosome splits longitudinally preparatory to cell division. Sister Chromatids : each pair of newly replicated chromatids Centromere : the region where sister chromatids join Spindle : array of microtubules emanating from both poles of a dividing cell during mitosis Centriole : a paired organelle that helps organize the microtubules during cell division

23 The Cell Cycle Control System The sequential events of the cell cycle are directed by a distinct cell cycle control system, which is similar to a clock The clock has specific checkpoints where the cell cycle stops until a go-ahead signal is received

25 For many cells, the G 1 checkpoint seems to be the most important one If a cell receives a go-ahead signal at the G 1 checkpoint, it will usually complete the S, G 2, and M phases and divide If the cell does not receive the go-ahead signal, it will exit the cycle, switching into a nondividing state called the G 0 phase
