2 Life During the Great Depression The Great Depression Affected Everyone Three Groups that were affected the most were –Farmers –Migrant Workers –Unemployed Living In Cities

3 The Dust Bowl A period of severe dust storms causing major agricultural damage to prairie lands in the 1930s (Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Northern Texas and the Midwest)

4 The Dust Bowl Farmers had cleared too many trees and when the winds came, there was nothing holding the soil in place.

8 Migrant Workers People affected by the Dust Bowl and droughts. Mainly farming families who lost their farms or farm-related employment. These people had to migrate back and forth across the country to find work.

11 Unemployed In Cities As we discussed yesterday, it was not just farmers and people working in the agricultural field who were affected by the Great Depression. Many factories shut down as well, leaving people in cities without jobs.

12 Unemployed in Cities The unemployed in cities usually did not have transportation to leave the city and find work elsewhere. Instead of becoming migrant workers, they stayed in the city, taking whatever jobs they could find.

13 Bread Lines and Soup Kitchens To help the unemployed, many charitable organizations began (there were no government-sponsored help programs) Soup Kitchens- A place where free food is served to those who are homeless or down on their luck Bread Lines- The lines that formed outside soup kitchens and food pantries –Usually these lines were full of men and women trying to provide for their families

18 Perspective The unemployment rate rose to 38% during the Great Depression Right now, it’s at 7.8%
