Secondary Math 3 3.7 SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATIONS

No Warm Up Get out homework 3-5 Long division of polynomials so that we can correct it!

Warm Up REMEMBER: To add like terms with fractions they need to have a common denominator When dividing fractions, multiply by the reciprocal

Vocabulary An extraneous solution is a solution of an equation that has been derived from the equation but is not a solution. When working with rational equations you must check the solution in the original equation.

Finding Restrictions on Rational Equations The denominator of a rational expression cannot be zero. When solving a rational equation, any value that makes any denominator zero must be excluded as possible answers (called restrictions).

Example 2 - Restrictions

Solving Rational Equations To solve a rational equation: Determine any values that would make the denominator zero. Find a common denominator by finding the least common multiple of the denominators. Multiply all of the terms on both sides of the equation by the common denominator to eliminate fractions. Simplify and solve the resulting equation. Compare your answer with the restrictions to ensure that it is valid.
