CHEMISTRY SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 DENSITY

SCIENCE STARTER Work silently and individually on your Science Starter Do not use your note You have 3 minutes

OBJECTIVES SWBAT – Identify differences between mass and weight – Define volume – Apply density formula

AGENDA Science Starter Quiz review Density activity

QUIZ REVIEW Definition of chemistry Difference between applied and pure chemistry 5 major divisions of chemistry Convert using dimensional analysis

QUIZ REVIEW (CONT) Steps to the Scientific Method Differences between hypothesis, theory and law Definition of measurement Accuracy and Precision

DENSITY SODA CANS

OBSERVATION Using the handout in the Observation block – identify what do you see. Provide details.

PROBLEM List any problems or question you may have in the PROBLEM block.

HYPOTHESIS In the Hypothesis block – state your hypothesis

EXPERIMENT In the Experiment block – list the steps for this demonstration

DEMONSTRATION Do the demonstration

DATA COLLECTION/ANALYSIS Record in details what you saw happened. Then analyze the data that was collected

CONCLUSION What was the result? Did you conclusion support the hypothesis?

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

MASS – the amount of matter an object has – Base unit is kilogram – Use a scale

WEIGHT – Measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object – Its value can change depending upon location

VOLUME Definition – the amount of space an object occupies

VOLUME – LIQUID MEASUREMENT Liquid - put into a liquid measuring device (such as a graduated cylinder) and the amount seen is the measured value

VOLUME – SOLID MEASUREMENT Regular shaped solid – can be determined by using the volume formula for the shape – Rectangular box: V=lwh – Cube: V=s 3 – Cylinder: V=πr 2 h – Sphere: V=4/3 πr 3

VOLUME SOLID MEASUREMENT (2) Irregular shaped solid – Water displacement Take the volume measurement of water in a container Add the irregular shaped solid and take the new measurement Take the difference to get the volume of the solid

DENSITY Definition – the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance D = mass/volume = m/V

DENSITY QUESTIONS Complete the Density Question Worksheet.
