Session 2 Jigs and Formers
You may have covered some of these words in your lessons already. Find out and then write a definition for each one. You can use the internet or your book to help you. Write it in your own words so that you have a better understanding. What is a jig?  What is a former? What is a template?  What is a pattern? What is a mould? Watch the video below

How it’s made Now you have watched the video what part of the making process used a former? Task: Draw and explain how this process worked. How did they get the shape of the skate board? What did they use? This link shows you more about the use of formers.

Jigs Watch the video below. This will explain how a simple drilling jig works. Here is another page that will help you with understanding other types of jigs. Task: Complete some research into other jigs. What other products are manufactured using this process

Answers A jig is used to make sure that parts are made exactly the same, without the need for marking out. For example, when drilling through a block of wood with two holes in, it will make sure that the holes are drilled in the same place in each component. A former is used to make sure that parts are shaped or bent to exactly the same shape. A template is something that you can draw around to mark a shape onto material, so that it can be cut or shaped. A pattern is used to make a mould when casting in metal or plastic resin. It is a replica of the finished object and may be made in wood or another soft material. Patterns are also used when shaping plastics in a vacuum-forming machine. A mould is a hollow shape used when casting metal or plastic resin. Moulds for casting metal can be made in a special type of sand, in metal or in plaster. Moulds for casting resin can be made of plaster or rubber. Video answer: When the layers of veneer are squashed together with a large clamp. The man in the video calls it a mould but the technical word is a former. It forms the shape that is required.
