BEST PRACTISE Use of permeable paving As part of a new Railway Station in Bromsgrove a new car park was being installed. This permeable solution had to be suitable for HGV’s as such required the use of HBCGA “Hydraulically bound coarsely graded aggregates”. A design solution using permeable paving was developed to improve drainage and make it more resilient to climate change.

BEST PRACTISE Economic Advantages This paving technique was more expensive however less long term maintenance issues. The Permeable paving has its own small amount of Attenuation so this was taken away from the required project attenuation and resulted in a smaller Attenuation tank. –Less Excavated material going off site –Smaller Attenuation tank resulting in a reduction of sub contractor cost. Social Advantages The permeable paving and the use of permeable concrete has resulted in a fast draining surface so standing water. Where possible water was directed to these permeable paved areas for removal from the road way. This lead to less gullies required so less chance of injury from slips trips and fall. Less excavations required to install gullies and attenuations tanks resulting safer construction. Environmental Advantages The solution means that in the event of heavy periods of rain water will drain away quicker All water was still diverted via an interceptor minimising any pollution risk. Maintenance is required every 2-5 years to clean blocks and grit to ensure that it is not getting clogged with mud and detritus.
