2. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Important efforts have been made by Spanish fishing authorities since the accesion to the EU in 1986, in order to adjust the capacity of the fleet to the possibilities of fishing resources. Renewal and modernization criteria, as well as global capacity management measures have been strictly applied.

3. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Spanish authorities are currently working in improving the quality of data for the Fishing Fleet Register. For this purpose, a comprehensive review ship by ship is been carried out, since the last three years, in order to regularize the situation of a large number of small boats that had no obligation to do landing declarations. This process has resulted in the definitive exit from the census of many of them.

4. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA After the publication of Regulation (EC) 2371 / 2002 of the Council and its development by Regulation (EC) 1438 / 2003 of the Commission, an ongoing process started in 2003, that has resulted in a reduction of the fishing fleet capacity and therefore in the overall fishing effort.

6. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA As noted in the table above, a reduction in the number of ships in the Spanish fishing fleet has been achieved during the last 11 years: 6.402 ships, representing 37 % of the fleet, so from 17.518 vessels in 1998 there are now 11.116 ships registered (31 December 2009).

THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA This evolution of the Spanish fleet presents a reduction in terms of tonnage and power, as a result of policies of vessels exits, and the permanent withdrawal aid, so there has been a reduction in tonnage of 115.215 GT and 427.375 kW power, since 1998 until now.

10. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Firstly, tackle serious and detailed analysis of the situation of each fleet, in order to proceed to the detection of segments or modalities which is considered to have an excess in capacity.

11. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Secondly, the establishment where necessary, of specific capacity adaptation plans with a series of adaptation objectives regarding assessment of fishery resources.

12. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Thirdly, a key point is to tackle this task with the necessary flexibility in the implementation of adaptation to respect and adjust the situation of each of the affected fleet, in coordination with management plans.

13. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA The final objectives of the Spanish fisheries policy are: Increase economic strength of the fishing fleet Improve competitiveness Adaptation of the fishing primary sector to the new enviromental and markets goals and situation.

14. THE FISHING SPANISH FLEET IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA The Mediterranean Spanish fleet is engaged in the same criteria for reduction have been imposed for all other fleets, so there have been a decrease in the number of vessels as in the rest of the Spanish fleet.
