Calcium oxide (quicklime) Calcium hydroxide (slaked lime)
3
Quicklime It is a white, caustic, alkaline crystalline solid at room temperature. It releases heat when dissolved in water. It’s a base. Its chemical formula is CaO.
4
Melting point :2572 °C Boiling point :2850 °C Solubility in acids :soluble Solubility in methanol :insoluble Acidity :12.8
5
Slaked Lime It is a colorless crystal or white powder. It is of low toxicity Calcium hydroxide is used in many applications, including food preparation.
6
Melting point: 580 °C Solubility in water :0.189 g/100 mL (0 °C) Solubility :Soluble in glycerol and acids. Insoluble in alcohol. Acidity :12.4 Basicity :(pK b )2.37
7
Heat of Solution of Calcium Hydroxide Aim: Determine the molar enthalpy of solution of calcium hydroxide.
8
Approach: Determine the molar enthalpy of neutralization using the Heat of Neutralization experiment. Using calorimetry, determine the molar enthalpy of solution by dissolving calcium hydroxide in an aqueous HCl solution and accounting for the heat of neutralization in the calculations.
