2 What is a drug? Drugs are chemical substances which, when introduced into the body, can alter the biochemical systems of the body, ie they affect the way the body works Many drugs have important medical uses, but some drugs can be misused and may have dangerous side-effects The use of certain drugs, which society considers addictive and harmful, is illegal Two drugs that are widely available and considered socially acceptable for adults over 18 years of age are nicotine and alcohol

3 Alcohol A vast range of drinks contain different amounts of alcohol Drinking alcohol is a socially acceptable way to relax Alcohol works on the central nervous system (CNS) It is the chemical ethanol in the alcohol that can affect sports performance, as it acts on the part of the brain responsible for balance, speech and coordination Like most drugs, it can be addictive and can have other side-effects such as aggressive behaviour, dehydration and loss of body heat

4 Effects of alcohol Short-term effects of alcohol consumption include: It lowers inhibition and creates a feeling of well-being It first stimulates, then depresses Slowed brain and muscular activity Slowed thinking and reaction time Impaired judgement of time and distance
