OVERVIEW Our project aims to develop an application that can assist paralyzed person to control her room environment to some extent. The idea is to make her independent enough so that she becomes able to perform simple tasks without constant assistance. This app will help paralyzed people to be independent and not rely on an assistant to be around them 24/7 and it will also reduce the frustration level that is easily known phenomenon among the paralyzed.

MOTIVATION Assistive technology is a fairly new idea in the recent advancements in technology. It has been widely neglected on a mass scale. Though there have been numerous efforts on communication, little work has been done on allowing paralyzed patients to control their physical surrounding environment. We wish to contribute in this domain, and develop a product that is both accessible and affordable to the average man.

CURRENT PRACTICES Wheel Chairs: Manual or automatic Mouth stick - a device that enables users to control input through a stick that they manipulate with their mouth. Eye tracking - The device follows the movement of the eyes and allows the person to navigate through the web with only eye movements. Voice-activated control units you can use to control things such as lighting, temperature or the telephone in your home Neural based assistive technology

LIMITATION OF CURRENT PRACTICES Wheelchairs are for those patients who are not paralyzed shoulder down. Voice Activated Systems are for patients whose speech is clear; it does not cater the problem of slurred speech. Neural based systems are expensive and are not affordable by all people. Other systems require a paralyzed patient to be constantly attached to a tool like head band, wrist band.

METHODOLOGY A smartphone camera is placed on a stand, facing the patient on the bed or sofa or wheelchair. User makes a facial gesture. A gesture has been made by the user; app detects the gesture. App processes the gesture to map what it is meant to do. Application sends a signal to the Arduino through Bluetooth Arduino receives the signal. Arduino controls the specific relay (which acts as a switch) to operate the circuit of the relevant appliance connected to it. The application would be using the camera continuously for detecting gestures.

CONCLUSION Controllo falls under the domain of assistive technology. Although there have been numerous efforts under this domain, little work has been done on allowing paralyzed patients to control their physical surrounding environment. This application aims to improve the quality of life of paralyzed people by granting them the power to independently control their room appliances. We wish to contribute in this domain, and develop a product that is both accessible and affordable by large audience.
