2 BACKGROUND Nursing - Students on NMC approved pre-registration nursing education programme, must be supported and assessed by mentors. Midwifery - Students on NMC approved pre-registration midwifery education programme, can only be supported and assessed by mentors who have met the additional sign-off criteria. NMC. (2008). Standards to support learning and assessment in practice, NMC standards for mentors, practice teachers and teachers. London. NMC
