4 Independent Study Day 2 Read from page 139 to 147 Think about the following questions – Can you explain what “mathematics draws on multiple semiotic systems to construct knowledge” means? – Which of the grammar of mathematics features described in article are difficult for your students? Goal is to capture feelings or meaning to the person not linguistic correctness. Affect: Supports low-risk learning environment Interaction / Practice: Facilitation of Language Development

Identify the natural language, mathematics symbolism, and graphic representations in problem 52 and explain how students must recognize the interaction of these semiotic systems. 2. Give examples not found in the article of – Long, dense noun phrases – An attributive clause – An identifying clause and explain why they might be difficult for EL.
