Present Scenario Right from the inception of NMDC, we are measuring manually the level of Diesel, Petrol in our underground tanks situated at Valley Stores and Hill Top Diesel Bunks with the help of a dip rod both at the time of opening and closing of the pumps. In rainy seasons it becomes quite difficult to take the dip level readings because of possibility of water entering into the tanks and also in late evening or in night the dip rod mark not seems clearly due to poor visibility. 2

In Proposed Procedure Fuel (Diesel/Petrol) level is measured by a Electronic Sensor whereas the ambient temperature and inside tank temperature are measured by Temperature sensors. Fuel level readings and temperature readings are displayed on the computer screen. All time data are available on the screen. Fuel level in U/G tank is continuously appears on the PC screen while decanting of diesel/petrol tankers. 4

Comparision b/w present and proposed procedures Sl No. DescriptionIn at Present conditionIn Proposed condition 1Continuous Monitoring of fuel level in U/G tank. Not possible. (Ex: At 11 KL balance in 15 KL tank, several time dip readings are required to be taken while decanting to avoid overflow of fuel. ) Possible. Level of fuel in U/G tanks can be seen on the computer screen. 2Man PowerComparatively MoreComparatively less 3Time consumption for taking dip readings. Comparatively More ( apprx. 30 Minutes / day /bunk ) Very less (Few seconds only) 4Decanting of fuel in rainy seasons Very difficult. We have to wait for stopping of rains as no sheds are there at the bunks. Very easy. 5Light visibilityRequiredNot required 5

Gauger -420 Sensor Gauger420 is a mono-block, 2-wire, ultrasonic level meter with integrated 4-20 current loop /HART protocol for output and USB interface for configuration, external and internal temperature sensors and firmware upgrade featuring accurate level measurement at rapid response time. It is rich featured ultrasonic level sensor for liquid and solids applications. The system is equipped with a USB interface and optional RS 485 digital output, allowing simple configuration, monitoring by PC and firmware modifications as per requirement and application. Measurement is continuous and does not require contact with the target. The system measurement distance spans 15 cm to 8 meters. Gauger420 operates at an ultrasonic frequency of 75KHZ (optional 50 KHz) and is robust in noisy conditions. Gauger420 is fed from 24 VDC power. Measured data is reported over a 4- 20mA current loop. Both 4mA and 20mA end points may be set independently and may support both upward and downward trends. 6

Gauger -420 Sensor Gauger420 can track liquid targets rising as rapid as 10 meters per minute (33'/min) and exhibits an extremely short dead zone ( i.e the minimum distance that can be measured by a level sensor) of just 15cm (6"). Gauger420 can also be applied to Open Channel Flow (OCF) applications in flumes and weirs and to volume measurements in tanks. For measurement followings are required- - A New gauger 420 firmware. -Gauger 420 installation CD. -A PC with window XP, CD drive with USB port 7

Installations Gauger 420 electronic sensor is required to be installed on the top of Diesel/petrol tank in which fuel level is to be monitored. Gauger 420 must have the connection with the internal and external (optional) temperature sensors. Connect the Gauger 420 with the PC by means of external leads. Gauger420 is powered by two-wires which also carry measurement information. Gauger 420 software CD is then installed over the PC and configurated, calibrated the system in tune of Gauger 420 and temperature sensors. The tank shape and dimensions are then required to be defined for displaying the volume of the fluid inside the tank. When tank shape and dimensions are defined, the Gauger may also be set to display volume of the target. Configuration of Volume elements can only be executed using the PC configuration method. Distance or level may be set from the keypad or from the PC configuration tool. Gauger420 can calculate and report Volume rather than Distance or Level. 8

Procedure Turn on the PC and voltage supply to Gauger- 420. Gauger sense i.e calculates the level of the fluid (i.e Diesel/Petrol) inside the tank based on measured level, tank shape and dimensions and sends the data to the PC over RS 485 interface( for models supporting RS485) by means of connected leads. On the PC screen installed Software converts the analog data into the digital form and Numeral values shows on PC screen subsequently. The current read by the user should be interpreated as follows- Measurement value= {Value represented by 4 mA} + { Value represented by 20 mA – Value represented by 4 mA} x [Current(mA ) -4 ] / 16 Measurement related information is conveyed by current magnitude which may take any value between 4mA and 20mA. The current may represent one of the following Measurands: Level Distance Volume 9

Procedure Temperatures are measured by the external (optional) and internally mounted temperature sensors which are embedded within accoustic sensors. The temperature is sensed by a temperature sensor which is embedded within the acoustic sensor. In installations where temperature varies very rapidly in time and location, it may be preferable to install an external temperature sensor which will follow more closely the varying temperature. Temperature may be viewed on the built-in display. Temperature readings on the display present the following table- At the time of decanting of Diesel/Petrol from tankers into the Underground tanks, the fluid level and temperature inside the tank also shows on the PC screen measured by the Gauge -420 and temperature sensors. 15 Definitions Distance to empty level is defined as the distance from the face of the sensor to the bottom-most surface of the target to be measured. Distance to full level is defined as the distance from the face of the sensor to the top-most surface of the target to be measured. The default value for distance to full level with 75 KHZ sensor is 15cm. This is also “dead zone” of the Gauger and cannot be reduced under any circumstances. 15
