Elements and Compounds Booklet

Cover Write the title “Elements and Compounds” Write your first name, last name, and class period in the lower right corner. Decorate your cover with chemistry design.

Page One Define the word element: use text Draw a picture of an element 6cmx6cm 1.What does the symbol for an element, on the periodic table, start with? 2.What do you notice about elements with two letter symbols? 3.What is the name of the chart used to organize elements? 4.How is that chart arranged?

Page Two Define the word compound and draw a picture of the compound Nitrous Oxide.p. 46. N2O Draw the square 6cm x 5cm

Page Three Copy the list of elements and compounds. AlLi 2 OHAg O 2 Fe 2 O 3 H 2 O 2 HCl CO 2 HeCuO H 2 O Write element or compound next to each. If a compound give how many atoms of each. What did you notice about the number in a formula for a compound?

Page Four Copy the list of elements and compounds H H 2 OWAuO OCl 2 H 2 O 4 HCl As 2 He 4 CuO C 3 Underline the elements with a blue pencil Underline the compound with a red pencil How do elements and compound differ? (how can you tell the difference?)

Page Five Copy the list of elements and compounds. He - 1Li 2 OH 2 C 4 Ag H 2 - 2 Cl 2 O 3 H 2 O 2 HCl CO 2 H 2 SO 4 CuO HO 3 Write the number of atoms next to each element or compound. Are the number of atoms always the same as the number of elements?

Page 6 Draw the equipment needed to find the density of a rock. What is the formula for density? What would the density of the rock be if it had a mass of 200g and a volume of 10cm 3 ?

Page Seven Create a pie chart using the information below for the elements that make earths atmosphere. Nitrogen 78 % Oxygen 21% Other gases 1%

Page 8 Draw a 100ml graduated cylinder with liquid at 40 ml. Draw another 100ml graduated cylinder with a 200 g Rock added with a volume of 100ml. What would be the density of the rock? Show your work.

Page Nine Create a pie chart using the information below for solid earth. Oxygen - 47% Silicon - 28% Aluminum - 8% Iron - 5 % Other 12% Why is silicon half of the percentage for oxygen? What element is the most abundant? Remember sand is SiO 2 which makes up most of the solid earth’s crust.

Page Ten Create a bar graph using the information below for the elements in the ocean. Hydrogen 64% Oxygen 32% Chlorine 2% Sodium 1.5% Other.5% Explain why Hydrogen is 2x greater than Oxygen. Remember ocean water is H2O plus salt ( NaCl ).

Page 11 Draw the beams of a triple beam balance with the following masses. 400 g 70 g 6.4 g What is the total mass?
