11 EGYPT: NEW KINGDOM ✕ Tuthmosis II marries his half sister Hatshepsut. ✕ Tuthmosis dies early and Hatshepsut soon after declares herself the first woman Pharaoh in Egyptian history. ✕ Expanded Egypt through trade & war ✕ The Pharaohs that came after Hatshepsut try to erase any record of her ever living.

15 EGYPT: NEW KINGDOM ✕ Akhenaten causes religious turmoil by switching from Polytheistic beliefs to Monotheistic beliefs. ✕ The God Aten became the only deity that was worshipped ✕ Polytheism  Belief in more than one God. ✕ Monotheism  Belief in one God.

16 EGYPT: NEW KINGDOM ✕ Nefertiti was the wife of Akhenaton who is believed to have influenced him greatly in his decision to just worship the God Aten ✕ She is reputed to be the most beautiful woman to ever live in Egypt.

18 TUTANKHAMUN ✕ Tutakhaten became Pharaoh when Akhenaten died. ✕ He was quickly manipulated by the old priests and advisor who wanted to return Egypt to its former beliefs ✕ So he changed his name back to Tutankhamun symbolizing the return to old beliefs ✕ He was assassinated soon after.

21 NEW KINGDOM: EGYPT ✕ Ramses II rises to power soon after the death of King Tut. He reigns for 66 years and is considered the greatest and most powerful of the Pharaohs of Egypt. ✕ He invested in and commissioned hundreds of statues and built many temple complexes.

25 ✕ Extended territory into Nubia and Eastern Mediterranean ✕ Ramses II (The Great) attempts to expand the empire but is thwarted by the Hittites. ✕ The Egyptians and Hittites fought over the area of Syria, neither won but Ramses claimed victory.

28 EGPYT: NEW KINGDOM ✕ Invasion by the Sea Peoples brought Egypt’s war against the Hittites to sudden end. Both the Hittites and the Egyptians now have to deal with this new threat ✕ No one knows who the Sea Peoples were or where they really came from. ✕ But they have a direct impact on the fading power of Egypt leaving it vulnerable for others to come in and conquer.

29 NEW KINGDOM: VALLEY OF THE KINGS ✕ Tutmosis I chose a new area to begin burying the Royal family ✕ This place, close to Thebes, came to be known as the Valley of the Kings

31 EGYPT: DOWNFALL ✕ By 1000 B.C. Egypt is in serious decline and open to foreign invaders.  Libyans 945 B.C  Kushites 727 B.C.  Assyrians 627 B.C.  Persians 525 B.C.  Greeks 332 B.C.  Romans 30 B.C.

32 EGYPT: DOWNFALL ✕ Cleopatra  Ptolemaic queen who was the last ruler of Egypt before Rome knocks Egypt out for good.  She tried to gain more power by seducing the great ones of Rome. It backfires.  She commits suicide by having a poisonous snake bite her (only after testing on her servants).
