Stanford Linear Accelerator They use exponents and roots to express the sizes and numbers of particles they study.

Rene was born on March 31 st, 1596 When he was 1 year old his mother died and his father became his legal owner At 8 years old he went to “college” When Rene got older, his father wanted him to be a lawyer. But, he did not want to be a lawyer, so he ran away to travel.

In 1649, Descartes was invited by the Queen of Sweden to work on mathematics. She wanted to work early in the morning. Rene had to get up early. He had to travel in the cold to reach the palace. After a few months, he died from pnemonia. He is credited with the modern notation for exponents.

On the Back of your Paper Explain the difference between: (-5) 2 and -5 2 Compare 3 * 2 3 2 2 3 Show that (4-11) 2 is ≠ to 4 2 -11 2

Explain the difference between: (-5) 2 = (-5)(-5) = 25 Whereas -5 2 = -(5·5) = -25 What if the exponent was odd? Compare: 3 * 2 =6 3 2 = 3*3= 9 2 3 = 2*2*2 = 8 Show that (4-11) 2 is ≠ to 4 2 -11 2 (4-11) 2 = (-7 ) 2 = 49 4 2 -11 2 = 16 – 121 = -105

Evaluate x – y (z * y 2 ) for x=20 y = 4 z = 2

Evaluate x – y (z * y 2 ) for x=20 y = 4 z = 2 20 – 4 (2 * 4 2 ) 20 – 4 (2 * 4*4) 20 – 4 (2 * 16) 20 – 4 ( 32) 20 + (-4 * 32) 20 + -128 20 – 128 -108 Something to think about, what about negative or fractional exponents?
