January 4, 2007 RHIC II Project Internal Cost Review Existing RHIC power supply Modifications Don Bruno & George Ganetis January 4, 2007 Power Supply Modifications

January 4, 2007 2 1002B Service Building

January 4, 2007 3 Design Goals This lattice design goals for magnets and p.s.’s were to: –Accommodate ratings of shunt buses –Get polarities of magnets correct –Use existing leads in valve box –Minimize the amount of works on the magnets in the tunnel.

January 4, 2007 4 Magnets & P.S.’s Being Removed Magnets Q4, Q5 and the DHX and DH0’s are being removed Q4 is being installed in place of Q6 Inner Q7 p.s.’s become a stand alone p.s.’s tq-4 and tq-5 p.s.’s are being removed. Q89 bipolar 300A p.s.’s are being removed. Number of p.s.’s will go from 37 to 34 in 1002B

January 4, 2007 5 Valve Box Modifications Use existing leads at the top of the valve box No piping changes are required at the top for leads or for Cold Crossing bus Have to re-wire internal wiring chamber and external connections Can salvage four 1600 Gas Cooled Leads to use on separately powered inner Q7. Use existing Cold Crossing bus (CCB) and make splices to it to extend length to new triplet location For the short lengths requires the project can use spare CCB, but this has to be reviewed. We may have to order some to replace the spare.

January 4, 2007 6 Existing Power Supply Circuit

January 4, 2007 7 New Power Supply Circuit

January 4, 2007 8 New RHIC p.s. classes in 1002B VratingIrating Quantity for blue and yellow We can use from existing 1002B p.s.'s Need to order Spares to order Total to order 15850808210 1545014212113 20200022000 1520066000 15bi-15044000 Total 341420323

January 4, 2007 9 Scope Perform Engineering and Design efforts –Quench Protection/Detection –Power Supplies –Valve Box Modifications –Ring Modifications (Interconnects to be re-done to change shunt busses) –Cold Crossing Bus Splicing

January 4, 2007 10 Scope Buy –Quench Protection Assemblies –Power Supplies –New Quench Detection cards –Parts for Valve Box Modifications, cold crossing bus modifications –Material Ring Modifications, Electrical Interconnects –Material for inner Q7 power leads (using 1600A leads possible solution – needs to be reviewed by cryo) Installation –Quench Protection Assmeblies and Power Supplies –Quench Detector re-wiring and new card installation –Valve Box Modifications –Electrical Interconnecting and Test

January 4, 2007 11 Costs by WBS

January 4, 2007 12 Major Procurements (direct $) High Level –Power Supplies – estimated at $1029K –Quench Protection Assemblies - $420K Low Level –Valve Box Modifications - $30K –Ring Modifications – $20K –Cold Crossing Bus Modifications - $5K –Electrical Interconnecting & Test - $10K –New In-Tunnel Power Leads - $10K

January 4, 2007 13 Contingency & Risk Depending on installation times more technicians may be needed. The technician workforce has been scattered throughout the lab and outside the lab. We may need to bring some of these technician’s back to work on the valve boxes and electrical interconnects of magnets. We have a design from accelerator physics but the desogn is being optimized for margin on the superconducting bus and we are hoping it won’t change now.

January 4, 2007 14 Milestones Design –Power Supplies and Quench Protection Assembly designs exist with the vendors. –Room Temperature external Terminal Connections –Valve box internal modification designs –Magnet electrical and mechanical interconnect designs (Tunnel) Procurement –All systems ordered –All equipment received and tested Installation –Equipment installed –System tests into shorts and with cold magnets.

January 4, 2007 15 Assumptions We are counting on being able to use experienced technicians or extensive training will be required. There are safety concerns: an external breathing apparatus is required. Funding is available as planned/needed
