Wade ERA – failed to pass Opposition – Phyllis Schlafly

4 Native American Struggles Much suffering on reservations for years White society viewed them as one group Land claims a key issue AIM– American Indian Movement – autonomy Standoffs w/gov’t. – Alcatraz; Wounded Knee 1973 (site of Sioux massacre in 1890) Gradual legislation giving control over education, land, water rights, etc.

5 The Environmental Movement Roots in progressive era (T.Roosevelt) Rachel Carson – wrote about chemicals in air/water, DDT, human responsibility to care for env. Nuclear concerns – NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Comm.) Earth Day – April 22, 1970 EPA – Environmental Protection Agency Clean Air Act/Clean Water Act Conflicts with big business Consumer movement – Ralph Nader – Unsafe at Any Speed, auto industry dangers
