Center for Community Modeling and Analysis System (CMAS) Adel Hanna Director, CMAS October 1, 2007 6 th Annual CMAS Conference, Chapel Hill, NC

CMAS: Six Years of Success The CMAS Center was established in 2001 as a mechanism for transferring state-of-the-science air quality modeling to the community l Serves as a bridge between various segments of the air quality modeling community l Fosters the growth of the developer and user communities l Serves as a clearinghouse of information l Is a hub for education and training about modeling

CMAS Functions l Outreach Develop the user community Promote value Establish and foster collaborations l Application and Training User support Training Consultation and model applications l Software Development Plans for external review, tracking, and documenting of model versions Maintain model codes and documentation Model inputs and outputs l Research Application driven Model testing, development, and evaluation Computational research and development Modeling Systems l Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) l Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) l Meteorology-Chemistry Interface Processor (MCIP) l Multimedia Integrated Modeling System (MIMS)

Analysis and Support l Visualization Package for Analysis and Visualization of Environmental data (PAVE) Visualization Environment for Rich Data Interpretation (VERDI) (This Conference: Presentation by Donna Schwede) l On-line CMAQ Operational Guidance Document l Input/Output Application Programming Interface (I/O API) l CMAQ Graphical User Interface (GUI) – Helps users download, compile, and run the various components of CMAQ l Spatial Allocator – Processing of surrogates for emissions – Creates the inputs for biogenic emissions processing that are required by the SMOKE modeling system

The CMAS Community l More than 1,600 registered users from 90 countries … and growing l Users requested over 5,300 model downloads so far in 2007 l CMAS listserv includes more than 1,000 members l Family of models and tools: CMAQ, SMOKE, WRF, MCIP, I/O API, PAVE, and Spatial Allocator

The World of CMAS

Training l Four training sessions per year (Chapel Hill) in addition to users’ locations – CMAQ – SMOKE l International CMAS training (2007) – Bulgaria – Canada – China (in USA) l Training on WRF for air quality modeling

CMAS Model Research (1) (Collaboration with EPA/ORD & EPA/OAQPS) l Updates to CMAQ – On-line Radiative Transfer Calculations for Photolysis in CMAQ (This Conference: Presentation by Frank Binkowski) – Sea Salt Modeling and PM Mass Transfer Algorithms (This Conference: Presentation by Uma Shankar) – Assimilate Satellite-Derived Surface Solar Insolation into WRF – Four Dimensional Data Assimilation in CMAQ (This Conference: Presentations by Alexis Zebrow) – Direct Aerosol Feedbacks in CMAQ-WRF Meteorology-Chemistry Modeling System – Snow Model for WRF-Meteorology – CMAQ-DDM-3D/PM (Georgia Tech) l Based upon V4.5, runs in parallel, and can compute particulate matter sensitivities – CMAQ with Alternate Cloud Treatment (TVA) l Based upon V4.5 and can output optional cloud cover fields, modify amount of cloud cover, convective cloud enhancement

CMAS Model Research (2) (Collaboration with EPA/ORD & EPA/OAQPS) l Emissions and SMOKE – Spatial Allocator Tool for National Land Cover Data – Spatial Allocator Tool for Future-Year Allocation of Anthropogenic Emissions of Criteria Pollutants – Forest Growth and Fire Fuel Predictions (This Conference: Presentations by Alison Eyth & Limei Ran) l Model Evaluation Methodologies – AMET - Atmospheric Model Evaluation Tool l Hybrid Modeling – CMAQ-AERMOD (This Conference: Poster by Sarav Arunachalam) l Economic Benefits and Health Impact Analysis – BenMAP - Environmental Benefits and Mapping Program l Neighborhood-Scale Modeling, National Urban Database and Web Portal (This Conference: Special Session)

Reviews and Publications l Peer-Reviewed Publications – Special Issue (Atmospheric Environment) (2004 Conference) (Published May 2006) – Special Issue (Journal of Applied Meteorology) (2005 Conference) (Published 2007) – Special Issue: (Environmental Fluid Mechanics) (This Conference) l Topic: Physics-Chemistry Interactions in the Atmosphere from the Perspective of Air Quality l Deadline for Submission: March 1, 2008 l Third CMAQ Review – Completed Spring 2007

This Conference l 133 Papers (Oral and Poster Presentations) l 215 Participants l International Participation l Journal Special Issue l Two Training Sessions (SMOKE and CMAQ)
