2 The Joshua Bell Experiment.
Are we too busy? The Joshua Bell Experiment.

3 In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100. This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito(not revealing who he is) in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

5 Vocabulary – we will build sentences after this.
Bough – main branch of a tree. Broad – wide Streams full of stars – a large constellation of stars that looks like huge rivers. Glance – take a brief and hurried look. Enrich – to improve the quality

6 Reading the poem

7 No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like stars in the night. No time to turn at Beauty’s glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can, Enrich that smile her eyes began. What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

8 A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

9 Structure of the poem It is made up with seven rhymed couplets.
A couplet is made out of two lines.

10 Tone The poem is about life in the fast-paced world.
‘We’ are just too worried or troubled to actually stop to appreciate the world as it is. So, the poet thinks that it is sad and a pity to let all these beautiful things around us to slip away. The tone here is reflective and regretful.
