NEWENT YOUNG LEADERS 2015-2016
13
“ We do not need magic to transform our world; we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better”
14
Do you agree that we have the power to transform things for the better? Are you interested in contributing fully to Newent School and its community? Can you imagine yourself representing your house and your year group in meetings? Are you brave enough to stand for election? WILL YOU BE A NEWENT YOUNG LEADER?
15
THE BASICS – WHAT DO WE NEED? We need 2 Year 7 students from each house (6 in total) We also need 2 Year 8 students from each house (6 in total) Anyone can stand for election but must be prepared to run an election campaign which will include speaking in front of your year group to outline your skills and interests. Everyone in the year group receives a vote as do tutors and the HOH. If you are elected you will be expected to attend a ‘Young Leader’s’ meeting once every half term and to actively contribute towards school events and the local community. You will be a role model and a shining example of ‘Newent- ness’.

WHAT HAPPENS? Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
23
YESTERDAY’S THEORY: WE ARE BORN WITH INTELLIGENCE – There is a fixed intelligence that can be measured using an IQ test – No matter how much you learn or how hard you work your intelligence stays the same! Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence Alfred Binet Invented the first useable IQ test
24
TODAY’S THEORY: MINDSET MATTERS Too often students believe the brain is static, leading them to think talent and giftedness are permanent, unchanging personal attributes that automatically bring later success. Every time you work hard, stretch yourself and learn something new your brain forms new connections and over time you actually become smarter. Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
25
Fixed Mindset: – LOOK SMART AT ALL COSTS Growth Mindset: – LEARN AT ALL COSTS Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
26
We need to praise: – Effort – Strategies that lead towards success – Resilience We should not praise: – Intelligence, “cleverness” or innate talent Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
27
Praising intelligence can make students fragile. “Wow, you’re really smart!” “Look at how well you did on this project. You are so intelligent!” Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
28
Try this instead I am proud of the effort you put in. When you think you can’t do it remind yourself you can’t do it yet. If it were easy you wouldn’t be learning anything. Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Striving for Excellence
29
