Why did Munch paint? He believed that art should show emotions or ideas. Artists don’t have to just paint “real life” What do you think is the title of this picture? The Sick Child (1886) How does this picture make you feel?
4
Sadness in the Sickroom
Munch’s younger sister was very sick. This picture and the previous one are the artist’s way of remembering that time.

Things to think about when we look at art
Mood: How does the painting make you feel? Sad, happy, confused? Color: How do the colors affect the mood of the painting. Do bright yellows and oranges make the painting feel happy? Subject: Who/what is in the painting and what is the relationship between subjects? Theme: What is the message? What is the artist trying to tell you?

The Scream, 1893 What do you see?

SUBJECT An individual (is it a man or woman
SUBJECT An individual (is it a man or woman?) expresses a feeling of agony, fear, or hopelessness as the two male friends walk away COLOR Munch uses colors that are not quite what one would find in nature. The black, blue, and gray in the landscape emphasize sadness. The red/orange of the sky reminds us of fire and the chaos it can bring COMPOSITION Munch uses wavy lines in nature and in the screamer to show emotion and a distortion of reality. The straight lines of the bridge are the person’s only connection to reality and sanity. By contrasting the person’s pale face and dark clothing, the viewer focuses on this individual. THEME and SUBJECT Munch used his art to share his feelings of sadness and hopelessness. He experienced a lot of sickness and tragedy in his life. The Scream forces the viewer to think about a time they shared those feelings.

Your Project Let’s think about a time when you or someone you know felt sad. On the left side of your paper, draw that time. What colors could you use to show sadness? The picture could be “real” or it could be distorted to show emotion Now let’s think about happiness. On the right side of your paper, draw a happy memory or turn the picture on the left into a happy moment. What colors could you use to show happiness?
