2 culture: the ideas, customs, skills, arts, etc. of a certain people during a given period of time (thus, culture is wholly dynamic). Note: culture can also be the improvement or refinement of the mind, emotions, manners, etc. sub-culture: a variation of a larger culture counter-culture: a sub-culture that is in defiance of the overall culture

3 “pop” culture: anything that is mass-produced and heavily influenced by mass media cult: any system or community of religious worship and ritual culture shock: spontaneous reaction to an unfamiliar culture ethnocentrism: judging others by one’s own culture (ie. “we’re right- -you’re wrong” orientation)

4 artifact: objects made by humans, including tools, weapons, clothing and containers that provide vital clues about human evolution appreciation: proper estimation or enjoyment; grateful recognition; sensitive awareness criticism / judgement: practice of analyzing, classifying, interpreting or evaluating a work of art

5 creativity: characterized by originality and expression of an original work or thought classic: a creative expression of the highest class; a model or best example of its kind; definitive in its class masterpiece: an outstanding work of art or craft; the greatest work of a person or group

6 art / artistic: a conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms or other elements in a manner that effects a sense of beauty genius: out of the ordinary intelligence or creative power aesthetic beauty: concern or appreciation of beauty

7 perception: an awareness and interpretation of sensory stimuli humanities: the branches of learning concerned with human thought and relations as distinguished from science humanitarian: a person who supports the advancement of social reform
