4
Which layer of the Earth is bendable like thick tar?
5
What is the Astenosphere?
6
What is plate tectonics?
7
What is the thoery that the pices of the Earth’s lithosphere are in constant motion?
8
What is a subduction zone?
9
What is the process which the ocean floor sinks through a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle?
10
What types of rocks make up the oceanic and continental crust?
11
Oceanic crust is made of basalt and Continental crust is made out of granite.
12
What is a convection current and how does it work inside the Earth?
13
A convection current is the flow that transfers heat within a fluid In the earth’s mantle the Asthenosphere flows. The heat from the Earth’s core heats up the lower Astenopshere. This material becomes less dens that the material above it and it starts to rise. Gravity pulls the older material down towards the core. Because the lithosphere and lower mantle are solid the Asthenopshere continuously flows up and down.
14
What is a rock?
15
A rock is a mixture of other materials (other rocks, animal, plant matter)?
16
What type of rock is formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface where there is a lof of heat and pressure?
17
What is a metamorphic rock?
18
What are the three major groups of rocks and why are they grouped that way?
19
What are Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic? They are group based on how they are formed.
20
What are 4 things that need to happen in order for sedimentary rock to form?
21
What are…? 1.Erosion 2.Deposition 3.Compaction 4.Cementation
22
What is an extrusive rock?
23
An extrusive rock is formed when lave erupts onto the earths surface.
24
True or False. Minerals are organic.
25
False, inorganic
26
What is streak?
27
The color of a mineral’s powder.
28
Name the six ways you can identify a mineral
29
1. Hardness 2. Color 3. Streak 4. Luster 5. Density 6. Crystal Shape 7. Cleavage & fracture 8. Special Properties
30
What are the three ways that minerals can be formed?
31
1.Crystallization of melted materials 2.Crystallization o materials evaporated in water 3.Minerals formed by evaporation
32
What are the five characteristics of all minerals?
33
1.Inorganic 2.Solid 3.Naturally occurring 4.Definite chemical compound 5.Crystal Structure
34
What are the 3 types of plate boundaries?
35
1.Convergent 2.Divergent 3.Transform
36
What is a sea spreading floor?
37
What is the movement of the ocean floor on both sides of the mid-ocean ridge as magma rises and creates a new ocean floor?
38
What happens at a transform boundary?
39
Continental crust slides past continental crust?
40
Where can divergent boundaries be found?
41
At the mid-ocean ridge and at rift valleys
42
Name two things that can happen at a convergent boundaries? (Where two plates come together)
43
1.Where two oceanic crust meet the more dense crust will sink below the less dense one at a subduction zone. 2.Where oceanic and continental crust meet the more dense oceanic crust will sink below the less dense continental crust 3.Where the continental crust and continental crust meet, mountains will form as the land is thrust upwards.
44
How can metamorphic rock change to sedimentary rock?
45
Over time metamorphic rocks can be lifted up when continental crust collides with other continental crust. Mountains can form here. Over time, the rock can erode away, deposit somewhere else, compact and cement
46
What are 3 forces that can change rock from one type to another?
47
Heat, pressure, water, or wind
48
Which type of rock came first?
49
Igneous. This rock formed all the ocean and continental crust. From there sedimentary and metamorphic rocks could form.
50
What type of rock would you expect to find near the mid-ocean ridge and near a subduction zone? Why would it be found there?
51
Igneous rock. At the mid-ocean ridge magma rises to form new ocean floor. At a subduction zone the heat may melt some of the rock and rise towards a weak spot in the continental or oceanic crust. At a subduction zone you may also find metamorphic rock because of heat and pressure.
52
How could sedimentary rocks form near a subduction zone?
53
Near a subduction zone of the ocean floor could melt to form magma. This magma could rise to a weak spot in the continental or oceanic crust. A volcano would form here. Over time the igneous rock from the volcano can erode away. The sediment can be deposited somewhere else, compact overtime and cement
