What is GPS? GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is used to find objects on land, sea, and air. It can be used to locate the elderly, track endangered animals, and inanimate objects.

Types of Uses? GPS has two different uses, civilian and military. Concerning military applications, GPS allows accurate targeting of various military weapons. Also, it is used to navigate and coordinate the movement of troops.

Uses cont…. ◊An almost unlimited number of civilian applications benefit from GPS signals, all of which utilize one or more of three basic components of the GPS: absolute location, relative movement, and time transfer. ◊To help prevent civilian GPS guidance from being used in an enemy's military or improvised weaponry, the U.S. Government controls the export of civilian receivers. A U.S.-based manufacturer cannot generally export a GPS receiver unless the receiver contains limits restricting it from functioning when it is simultaneously (1) at an altitude above 18 kilometers (60,000 ft) and (2) traveling at over 515 m/s (1,000 knots). 6 History GPS was inspired by the launching of Sputnik1 in 1957. Because of the Doppler effect, American scientists were able to track the frequency of the radio transmissions.

History cont….. The first satellite navigation system, TRANSIT, used by the U.S. Navy, was successfully tested in 1960. In 1967, the U.S. Navy placed accurate clocks in space. In 1970, Omega Navigation System, became the first world-wide navigation system.

Conclusion GPS has many civilian and military uses. The use of GPS will continue to grow.
