2. What is Physics?
Physics is the study of the interaction of matter and energy
Explains the physical world from the motion of subatomic particles to the structure of the universe
Quantum Mechanics to energy and forces of large objects
Fundamental forces – strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravity
Many applications from inventions to engineering

3. What are the branches of Physics?
Mechanics – motions of larger objects speed force acceleration momentum work
Thermodynamics – heat and temperature
Vibrations and Waves – reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference
Optics – lenses and mirrors
Electromagnetism – light, electricity and magnetism
Relativity – particles at the speed of light
Quantum Mechanics – subatomic particles

4. How do we solve problems in Physics?
Scientific Method – systematic way of solving problems

Hypothesis
Experiment – independent variable, dependent variable, constants and control

5. Measurements Have a value and unit Consider accuracy and precision
Value in correct number of significant figures indicates precision
zero between digit are significant
zero to right or end are significant
zero to left of decimal are not
Zero in front of nonzero digits are not .008
Values should be in scientific notation

6. Units include: grams, meters, seconds, Kelvin, Newtons, Watts, Pascals, calories, Coulombs, MeV, Hertz, volts and Teslas
Prefixes include:

10ֿ2………………..centi
10 3…………………..kilo

7. To convert units use dimensional analysis
1. Take number given multiply by conversion factor cancel units
ex: convert 37.1 µg to grams
37.1 µg x µg/g or g/ µg
37.1 µg x 1 g / µg = g cancel units

8. Try to think of just one object or system that does not involve Physics……..
